Coin: billon denier coronat, 19mm. Mint is Saint-Rémy ( ca.1266-1277 ). Obv : +K DI GRA REX CICL-E, crowned head of Charles I facing left. Rev : +COMES PROVINCIE, central cross. This coin was struck after the death of Beatrice in 1267, after Charles received the title of king of Sicily and Naples. Only the mintplace of Saint-Rémy has struck this type.
Life : Charles I was the youngest son of king Louis VIII and Blanche of Castille. As brother of King Louis IX the Pious he married in 1246 Beatrice of Provence. He is count of Anjou, Maine and Provence ( 1246-1285 ). In 1259 he became count of Piémont and was crowned king of Siciliy and naples by the pope in 1265. When he received the title of King of Jerusalem in 1277 Charles dreamed of a vast emperium but his ambitions desintegrated when he was defeated in 1282 by the Sicilian vespers. He died leaving his son in captivity.
