Although Saudi Arabia was the birthplace and remains the spiritual centre of Islam, one of the world's greatest religions, it has played little part in the history of the coins issued in the name of that religion. Until very recently Saudi Arabia experienced coinage only through its neighbours. The ancient coins of the Gulf states, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Jordan, Israel and Egypt have all been found in Saudi Arabia, and some of the ancient Yemenite coins must have been made within what is now its territory. Islamic coins from most parts of the Islamic world have also found their way into Saudi Arabia, in the hands of pilgrims on the road to Mecca.
