Hi @adrianus, very interesting to read your learned opinion here. Regarding barbaric origin, as a non-specialist of this type, I would agree for the left one. The right one has a peculiar ROMA lettering..  I see an M upside down there and R looking strange.

Question: do you regard the shape of the attribute behind the helmet (this curl) as a distinction criterion here ? And the size of the wolf, which seems notably larger on the right one ?

Hi lex,
The lettering is OK; the 'R' is pretty much off the flan, the'M' has a very low-reaching chevron connecting the two uprights ( like IVI )and this gives it the initial impression of being upside down.
As for style, the terminal of the crest is usually similar to this on 2nd workshop coins of Trier. The wolf is a little bigger but this is not at all unusual. Neither are stylistic criteria in the official series.

Yes I see now, the part of the R that I saw is actually part of the the helmet draping. The M still looks strange to me but regarding your known expertise on these pieces I trust this is an official issue of Trier. We'll ask our moderator aurelianus to move this thread to the official  Roman coinage category, thanks for the valuable clarification.
